202632-McKay RENOVATIONS
BEYOND THE BARRACKS
Designed by David
This rural property has evolved around what it needed to do. A modest 1950s home sits between two simple accommodation barracks, providing a practical arrangement for a family while the barracks are let to contractors and seasonal workers. Now, with the children getting older and family life changing, the opportunity is to bring the home into line with how a modern family actually lives, without losing the working nature of the property that helps make it possible. The existing house, barracks and covered links form an unusual Y-shaped arrangement, with the new work focused on making better use of that relationship. A more welcoming entry, increased foot print and a new covered outdoor living area will strengthen the connection between the house, the garden and the wider rural setting. The result is less about replacing what is there and more about making what is already working feel like home for the next stage of family life. Click on this LINK for PDF version.
